i. meeting

They smile and nod at each other, hoping that their personalities are compatible and that they'll get along well enough to work together. Craig was a bit of an ass, so Stephen's wary about the new host. He would figure Comedy Central would've found a guy who wasn't a chauvinistic pig this time, but he stopped trying to figure the Comedy Central executives out a long time ago.

There's a spark of something there when they shake hands—a flash of heat. They both see it and both recognize it in the other's eyes, and they're not sure what it is (they know it’s attraction). For a moment, their eyes lock and they look to an outsider as if they're practicing some strange type of magic involving eye contact and intense concentration. (There's definitely a magic of some kind, there.)

The moment passes, however, and they let go and look away, each thinking, maybe if I ignore it, it'll go away, (but knowing the truth: that's wishful thinking) and really wondering what the hell that was (and secretly hoping that it grows into something more).

ii. becoming friends

They like each other a lot, as it turns out. Stephen finds Jon funny and kind (and adorable, but he doesn't admit that one out loud) and Jon finds Stephen hilarious and laid back (and sexy as hell, but again, that's something he keeps to himself).

They become fast friends, hanging out, joking with each other, spending their time together and getting to know each other. Stephen finds out that Jon is a really good listener and he's very easy to talk to and trust. Jon loves how Stephen always manages to make him laugh when he's having a bad day or just generally makes him smile by being himself.

No longer (still) in the back of their minds is the feeling they both had when they first met, both (neither) forgetting it so it doesn’t get talked about (they’re too scared to bring it up). Obviously, it was nothing (they rationalize to themselves that it was probably nothing) and they shouldn’t spend any time dwelling on it (they think that they should let it go, both unaware that they feel the same way and far too terrified of the unfamiliar feelings to ask).

iii. touching

It doesn't take long for them to become affectionate with one another—a hug there, a pat on the back here—and they're both quite happy with this development. They say it's because they're pleased with the way their relationship has progressed (but really it's all due to that pesky attraction between them that they like to pretend doesn't exist).

Jon knows (pretends) that when Stephen is standing close to him with a hand on his shoulder his heart doesn't beat rapidly and his breathing doesn't quicken and he doesn't ever have the urge to move closer to him.

Stephen knows (also pretends) that when Jon's sitting close to him during the boardroom meetings and their knees brush by what for all intents and purposes is probably an accident, (even though it’s really not) and then stay touching that his body doesn't heat up and he doesn't wish to run a hand down that thigh and make Jon gasp a little. They just don't think these things (even though they actually do).

iv. kissing

It all starts with the damned pizza, really. They decide to do a funny little scene for the Indecision 2004 coverage they're doing, looking back at Indecision 2000. They pretend to kiss through a piece of pizza—acting gay is pretty hilarious, right?

But the pretend kiss in front of their audience leads to a real kiss as they're in Jon's office, on the couch, sitting too close, talking about nothing, and touching too much. They smile shyly at each other and lean in and kiss and they both wonder why it took so damn long for this to happen.

Jon likes to think that he's semi-level headed and Stephen also likes to think he's reasonable, so the fact that this kiss leaves them both more affected and aroused than they have been in awhile is clearly not something that will baffle them (but it does, not that they'll ever admit that) and clearly it's just lust. That's all.

v. fucking

Words of need and want and more, please fill the air. Moans and grunts of pleasure are music to each other's ears. Jon is babbling things that mean everything and nothing all at once; Stephen loves it, revels in it, thrusts harder and harder. They're both moaning continuously, now, saying things that couldn't be classified as 'words' precisely, but they're far, far past the time for coherency. It's wild and hot and fast and ohsogood as they ride the wave higher and higher and higher until it finally crashes and they're rocketed into a place where stars explode and angels sing and it's the best fucking thing they've ever felt and they don't ever want the feeling to end, even though, after a minute, it does, and they both come floating back to earth.

During sex is the only time words are used, vocalizing desire and lust and a little bit of something else they don't have to analyze because they only come when neither of them are paying much attention to anything that might require the use of higher brain functions. Before, there is nothing to be said, and after it’s the same thing. They don’t have anything to say, really (actually, they want to speak but both are afraid—anything said during this time could not be easily forgotten). It’s only fucking, nothing more (they couldn't write it up as unadulterated lust if someone admitted to real feelings)—so that's (not) okay, because they don't (do) have real feelings to voice (and they both desperately want to).

But right now they're content (not really—they're both hurting) and they catch their breath for a minute before Stephen gets up and starts getting dressed. Jon stays on the couch and closes his eyes in tiredness (but really sadness) and Stephen gives him one last glance before walking out the door.

vi. an affair

Still, things are kept light and fun when they're together but no longer does Stephen leave right after, and no longer is it silent, afterward. They talk and giggle like school kids who are breaking some sort of rule but know they're too smart to be caught. They cuddle and they're disgustingly cute and Jon makes fun of them often (because he loves it).

Stephen sighs, happy when Jon is pressed up against him as they're lying on the couch, sated and content. His head normally rests on his chest and it's kind of strange how they're a perfect fit (but Stephen suspected they would be). He closes his eyes and holds him, wanting to say something he knows might screw things up completely or make things even more wonderful.

Jon wonders if it's possible for him to just stay like he is, warm and satisfied, with Stephen's arms wrapped around him, but then he feels silly and like he's in some ridiculous romance novel (secretly he feels that if this is what being in a romance novel is like, he's all for it). He knows he shouldn't get used to this, or like it too much—they're both married, for chrissakes. Still, even in the face of that, he finds three words on his lips—three words that change everything.

vii. a break up

They knew it wasn’t going to last (they wished otherwise). They have lives—wives, children—and this affair was really only detracting from those. It wasn’t love (lie) and they didn’t need each other (bigger lie) so breaking it off is no problem at all (yet another lie).

They don’t give each other long glances at work (they do) and it’s not really awkward at all (it is) so they’re both fine (they’re not). Their coworkers and respective wives aren’t (are) noticing their strange behavior and aren’t (are) wondering why they’re acting differently around both each other and everyone else, because they’re not (except they are).

Neither (both) of them wish they could pick up where they left off and just get back to each other. They don’t miss it (only they do) and they don’t (do) feel like a part of them is missing. They’re (not) fine.

viii. falling in love

The denial finally crumbles—they can’t lie anymore. It takes a month or so and some subtle prodding by Samantha, (Stephen wonders how that woman is so perceptive) but the truth comes out, and it's rather simple, when it comes down to it.

Stephen can’t get enough of Jon’s shy smiles, or passionate kisses; he loves the noises he makes, he loves talking to him, holding him, (needing him, but that makes him sound sappy and he doesn’t like that much) and just being with him. He’s been denying what he feels for so long, out of some misguided sense of honor. Enough is enough.

Jon is scared, but he finally admits it. He's frightened by how intense Stephen can be and how much he can make him feel and how much he loves just being with him (and being held by him, not that he’s going to say that aloud, for fear of ridicule). It all terrifies him, and he loves it.

It simply ends up at the fact that neither of them can imagine life without the other.

(And that is finally the whole truth.)
