Stephen Colbert sighed as he waited in an exam room at Princeton Plainsboro Teaching Hospital in New Jersey. He hadn’t wanted to come to this clinic, but he and Jon had been in the neighborhood after taking some time off and as soon as Jon found out that Stephen’s neck and back were still bothering him, he’d made him come in. Jon was supposed to meet him here in about ten minutes, since they were hoping that the check up would be done by then.

Unfortunately, by the rate things were going, Stephen doubted it.

Just then, a man--presumably a doctor--hobbled into the room. He used a cane and he wasn’t wearing a lab coat, so Stephen was perplexed.

“I’ve been forced into clinic duty once again by that fire-breathing dragon who calls herself a hospital administrator, and now I have to sit here and listen to you complain about something that a kid who hasn’t even finished one year of medical school could diagnose. Go on.” The man sank into the chair in front of him.

Stephen raised an eyebrow. “Glad doctors are so personable these days," he said, and the man shot him a yeah, whatever, I’m bored now, just get on with it look. Stephen frowned before continuing: “It’s nothing, really, it’s just my back and neck have been hurting me lately and when Jon found out, he wanted me to come in here as soon as possible, rather than wait until we got back to New York.”

“Jon is your...friend? Brother?”

“Partner,” he responded nonchalantly. “He worries too much.”

Stephen thought he might have seen the doctor give him an I know what’s that like glance, but then he looked away and he felt he probably imagined it. “How long have your back and neck been bothering you?”

“A couple weeks."

Just then, another man with brown, neatly trimmed hair, a lab coat, tie, and pocket protector full of pens walked into the room, “House,” he said calmly, with the barest hint of an edge to his voice, “I need to talk to you.”

“Why, Dr. Wilson, how kind of you to interrupt us,” Dr. House said. "Aren't you supposed to be the polite one?"

“Now, House.”

“Ooh, well, I’m sure this is urgent. He might have some dirty pictures he needs to show me.” Dr. House smirked and he and Dr. Wilson left the exam room. Stephen’s eyebrows rose in bewilderment. Glancing at his watch, he noticed that Jon should be arriving any time soon.

A few minutes later, both Dr. House and Dr. Wilson returned; House didn’t look much different, except for the fact that he looked a bit more rumpled, and Wilson looked as put together and professional as he had when Stephen first saw him...except his tie was a little crooked.

Stephen smirked. It seemed he hadn’t imagined that look at all; someone else had a protective, worrying lover.

“How did you meet Jon?” Dr. House asked him suddenly.

“I work with him,” Stephen replied. “Why?”

“Let me ask the questions. It's more fun that way. Where do you work?”

“Uh, we work for a show on Comedy Central. The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.”

Dr. House smirked and nodded. “You two have couches in your offices?”

“...yes," Stephen said slowly, wondering what that had to do with anything. "We just got new ones a few weeks ago.”

“Ah. Well, that’s it then. Either stop screwing at work, or get some different, more comfortable couches.” And with that, Dr. House stalked out of the room as well as was possible with a limp and a cane. Wilson rolled his eyes.

“Don’t mind him. He has a flair for the dramatic,” Dr. Wilson told him before leaving the exam room himself.

Stephen smiled; this had been an interesting doctor’s visit. Getting up, he headed towards the waiting room where Jon was probably waiting for him. He had a few things to share.

And then they were going furniture shopping.
