i. how to get a shrink to stop talking

Hawkeye likes to listen to Sidney talk, this is true. The man is intelligent and soothing and overall, a very good conversationalist. There are many times he knows that he could just listen to him talking for a while and be perfectly content.

However, Sidney is still a shrink and still has a tendency to go on and on and on and just not shut up and while occasionally Hawkeye doesn’t mind one bit, there are nights when he would like to do much, much more than talk.

Luckily, Hawkeye knows how to deal with this and he finds that shooting Sidney one of his most evil and devilish little smirks followed up by a deliciously rough but oh-too-short kiss—that Sidney then must make up for by kissing him back, much more passionately, obviously—is a very effective way to make sure that neither he nor Sidney will be saying anything coherent for an hour or so.

ii. how to make a quiet shrink loud

Sidney, by nature, is a quiet sort. His voice is normally soft and gentle and soothing, but then, he’s a shrink, so Hawkeye knows that this makes perfect sense. Sidney’s voice is oftentimes a godsend for Hawkeye, because there are so many times he just needs to relax and Sidney is perfect for that.

But Hawkeye, by nature, is loud and boisterous and also by nature, he likes making others just as loud as himself. He thought this might be a challenge with Sidney, since the man was outwardly so reserved and quiet, but he found that the solution was simple enough.

Being a surgeon, Hawkeye has always known how to use his hands; they’re good for surgery but they’re also fantastic for caressing, for mapping out someone’s body, and for eliciting loud moans and groans from the person underneath him, especially when they’re wrapped around and rubbing the most sensitive areas. It’s amazing what sounds Sidney is capable of, and while Hawkeye enjoys his quiet, reserved, gentle shrink, the loud noises he makes while under the attack of those hands is music to Hawkeye’s ears.

iii. how to drive a shrink insane

Hawkeye knows that Sidney is a valuable person to himself and to many people he counsels because he is so steady, so constant, so amazingly sane in the insanity of the war around them, and people respect that and admire that and cling to that, Hawkeye included.

But Hawkeye is somewhat crazy himself and he thinks a little crazy every now and then is healthy. He definitely appreciates how calm and collected and together Sidney is, because it’s what helps everyone so effectively, but sometimes he just needs him to lose some of that collected aura and show a little abandon.

Hawkeye figures out that the best way to achieve that is with his mouth. His mouth is sometimes a tool for protection, sometimes for weaponry, but he thinks that its best use is driving Sidney just crazy enough. He loves it when he’s down on his knees in front of him and he glances up and Sidney has his eyes closed and is gasping and moaning and not collected. It's, in his not so humble opinion, pretty amazing.

iv. how to give a shrink what he needs

Sidney has always been up-front and clear about what he wants, and Hawkeye appreciates that very much. He knows that Sidney likes to take care of people and to help people, but he also understands that there is an underlying need for him to be taken care of himself, and Hawkeye has no problem indulging that.

The man communicates his needs, sometimes, in his own way, and Hawkeye has become very good at picking up on it. He likes to help Sidney, to give him everything he needs and more, because Sidney does the same for him and Hawkeye is grateful.

Hawkeye knows that sometimes Sidney needs to be the one to just let go and feel, and that he has to be the one to take control. There are times when Sidney needs to be completed and sated and taken, and Hawkeye has no problem with that. He revels in the feeling of being in Sidney and of driving the both of them to sweet, sweet completion and a place where there are fireworks and stars exploding and no bombs or wounded boys. He’s amazed by the fact that when he fulfills Sidney’s needs, he’s also fulfilling his own.

v. how to fall in love with a shrink

While Hawkeye—of course—enjoys the physical aspects of his and Sidney’s relationship—the kissing, the touching, the blow jobs, the sex—he has also come to enjoy a much less obvious part of it, as well.

Hawkeye has never really been one for commitment. He’s all about keeping it light and fun and just this once, because that’s safe, and safe means he won’t be hurt again. He’ll be damned if he can do the same thing with Sidney, however. He’s not exactly sure when Sidney bypassed his defenses, and he’s not exactly sure how and why and what next, but somehow, he doesn’t need to be.

Hawkeye will lie in a two-foot army cot with Sidney very close to him—it’s small, but somehow they manage—as they drift off to sleep, usually after rather fervent activity. Hawkeye can hear Sidney’s breathing in his ear and as he realizes that while he knows exactly what to do to get Sidney to react, Sidney also knows the exact same things about him. And for that, he reflects, he’s pretty special and maybe he should consider ignoring that last little niggling doubt and just saying “forget it” and jumping into this new and exciting feeling with both feet. He thinks Sidney would want him to.

And if there is anyone Hawkeye knows, it’s Sidney Freedman.
