Stephen stared, gobsmacked, as Abe, his perfect, precious, salt-of-the-earth, adorable, manly chocolate lab puppy nosed one of his toys toward Sammy, Jon's elitist, intellectual, liberal, un-American cat. He even looked at him with hopeful eyes.
Sammy eyed the toy, bent down to sniff it, then straightened; giving his tail a disdainful flick, he stared at Abe. Stephen thought he looked unimpressed. Abe just looked upset.
"Abraham Buchanan Colbert," Stephen said sternly, wagging his finger at him, "he is the enemy! Don't try to make friends with him!" At the sound of a distinctive giggle coming from the archway leading to the kitchen, Stephen snapped his head up. Jon stood there, leaning against the wall, looking amused. He rolled his eyes. "This isn't funny, Jon! Your cat has mind-control powers or something. Why else would Abe want to be friends with him?"
"Possibly because he's a puppy, and puppies generally want to be friends with anyone or thing they meet?" Jon suggested, raising an eyebrow. Stephen narrowed his eyes, picking Abe up off the floor and holding him close.
"Don't listen to him," he told the puppy conspiratorially. "I know you don't mean any of this." Abe happily licked his face.
