I’m not horribly unobservant, you know. I do notice things, even when the people around me are trying to be surreptitious.

Of course, people don’t think I do. They think I'm too wrapped up in myself or my act to see what's going on around me, to pick up on clues that others have missed. They think I'm too concerned with the outlandish and the ridiculous to figure out the subtle.

See how well they know me? Though I guess they can't be blamed for it; I do make it my mission here to keep people from knowing me. Apparently, I've succeeded.

But I digress.

The reason for this impromptu little declaration has to do with two people: Charles Emerson Winchester III and Maxwell Q. Klinger.

Charles is all right. Sure, he’s a pompous jackass and he can be a snob, but I generally like him. He understands the art of a good practical joke and has moments that do prove his humanity, even if he’d rather we didn’t know about them.

Klinger has always been rather peculiar—the nose, the food, the way he'd go on about Toledo, the clothes—but that’s okay because that’s one of the reasons we like him. We like that he’s his own brand of weird. It’s what makes him interesting.

If I were to travel around the world, I don’t think I could find any two men more opposite or less suited for each other.

And yet, somehow, yes, you guessed it: they’re together.

Now, I have no problem with homosexuality, and I never understood those who did. It’s not hurting anyone and that’s the only reason I could think up to dislike it. War kills people every day and we're still inviting more to come on down and have some fun, so why should we care what two guys like to do in the privacy of their own bedroom? Or, well, supply tent, in this case.

But considering the two people involved, at first I thought I was imagining things and that I was crazy—not exactly a stretch for me; just ask Sidney—but it’s there. Hard to fathom, I know, but it’s there.

That’s when I figured it was one of those crazy things that only happened because of the situation. War does do weird things to people and Klinger and Charles have shown no signs of ever caring for each other; then again, I suppose that’s the point. If they suddenly acted all chummy, I guess more people would be curious.

This is why I’ve finally come to the conclusion that they have some general feelings for each other. I don’t know exactly what, and I don’t think they’ve even told each other yet, but they’re both men and they're both stubborn, so that’s not exactly surprising, is it?

I wish there was some way I could let them know I knew and that I wanted them to be happy, but with the atmosphere around here, that would not only be dangerous but extremely stupid.

At least I can take some comfort in the fact that amidst the craziness of war and the bloodiness of mindless killing, something good has sprung from it.

In the end, that’s really all that matters.
