"You don't have a chance in hell," Samantha told Kristen bluntly, but her eyes were kind, sympathetic. "And believe me, it's got nothing to do with you."

Kristen opened her mouth to protest, or deny it, but then stopped, venturing, "Why, then?"

"Stephen Colbert."

"But—what does he—"

"He's in love with Jon. Has been at least since I've worked here," she said. "And Jon's blind spot concerning him is a mile wide."

"They're not together, though."

"Oh, of course not. Colbert's a closet case and Jon's oblivious. But even if you did somehow manage to get Jon, you'd never really have him. The second Colbert called because of some 'emergency'—he'd be gone. And the man is jealous. He'd invent ridiculous ways to get Jon away from you, and every single one of them would work."

“That doesn’t necessarily mean Jon’s in love with him,” Kristen protested. “Jon’s a good guy. He’d want to help out a friend.”

“Have you met Stephen Colbert?” Samantha asked. “There are some loyalties even friendship can’t explain. It has to be love. He’s too obnoxious to deal with otherwise.”

Kristen sighed. “Well, that's kind of depressing, isn't it?”

“For you, or for them?” Samantha said, raising an eyebrow. “Because I think it's worse for them. You have much better options. Which reminds me: Jason might proposition you for a threesome at some point this week. Try to let him down gently, if possible.”

Kristen laughed. “Thanks for the warning.” She paused meaningfully. “Both warnings, I mean.”

Samantha waved that away. "Let's get something to eat for lunch. I'm starving."

"Sounds good."
